De road trip naar Engeland en Wales voert voornamelijk langs steden met een wisselend historische gehalte. De Steden de we aandoen in Wales hebben enkele heel fraaie kastelen.
We starten in Kent in Canterbury, met de mooiste cathedraal van het verenigd koninkrijk, verder kasteel Canterbury en de old town met vele vakwerkhuizen en pittoreske straatjes.
Op de weg naar Rye doen we Tonbridge aan met Tonbridge Castle en her en der vakwerkhuizen.
Rye is gelegen aan de kust, een klein pittoresk stadje met wederom fraaie vakwerkhuizen en 2 typische verdedigingskastelen uitkijkend over een lagune.
Oxford is de volgende bestemming een typisch studentenstad dynamiek tegen een historisch decor, bijzonder in al zijn facetten, waaronder het Ashmolean Museum en de omgeving rond het Castle-Prison museum is een heerlijke omgeving
Stratford-upon-Avon aan de rivier de Avon is de geboortestad van Shakespeare, heeft een klein historisch centrum.
De volgende bestemming is Aberystwyth in Wales gelegen aan de Ierse zee, een universiteitsstad
De universiteit is gelegen naast de kasteelruïne aan de fraaie boulevard. Op het hoogste punt van Aberystwyth hebben we in de verte zicht op de top van Mount Snowdon welke we later op de route tegen komen.
Noordelijk vervolgen we de route naar Campsite Cae Du in Beddgelert, een klein stadje met een fraaie brug over de Afron Colwyn River, de uitvalbasis voor enkele bestemmingen.
Beddgelert heeft een station van het op smalspoor rijdende Welsh Highland Railway met historische locomotieven en rijtuigen, genieten als historisch spoor u kan bekoren.
Met de Welsh Highland Railway kan een trip worden gemaakt naar bijvoorbeeld een hike over Mount Snowdon, uitstappen op station Rhyd Ddu, een hike over mount Snowdon en weer bergafwaarts naar station Snowdon ranger. Op station Snowdon beslissen om door te gaan naar Caernarfon of terug naar Beddgelert.
Met de Snowdon Mountain Railway Llanberis Gwynedd is de top ook te bereiken, deze lijn is echter erg druk, dus verstandig om te reserveren.
Vanuit Beddgelert kunnen we Harlech bezoeken met Harlech Castle.
We vervolgen onze route naar Caernarfon met Carnarfon Castle welke de zeestraat van Menai verdedigde, hier heeft de inauguratie van Prins Charles plaatsgevonden als prins of Wales. Beaumaris castle verdedigde de andere zijde van de zeestraat.
Onderweg naar Conwy is Castle Penrhyn te bezoeken, dit kasteel is in tegenstelling tot de eerder bezochte verdedigingskastelen een woonkasteel, een enorm complex met het Walled Garden en het kasteel is volledig authentiek ingericht.
Daarna bereiken we Conwy met een imposant kasteel om de oversteek over de rivier de Conway en bereikbaar via de eveneens imposante kettingbrug te verdedigen.
Nu even een grotere overbrugging naar de volgende bestemming Lincoln, een advies om de hoger gelegen Old Town te benaderen vanuit het zuiden via Steep Hill, het is een klim de heuvel op maar de wandeling door deze prachtige Steep Hill zal veel vergoeden om uiteindelijk de schitterende omgeving van de Kathedraal en Lincoln Castle te bereiken.
Dan volgt Peterborough, een fraai centrumplein met aan de oostzijde de Peterborough kathedraal.
We vervolgen de route naar de derde universiteitsstad Cambridge met een historische binnenstad waar de fraaie universiteits gebouwen in de binnenstad domineren en de uitgestrekte Fellows Garden langs de River Cam.
De laatste bestemming is Rochester, met Rochester Castle langs de River Medway.
Terug naar Dover om de oversteek met de Ferry te maken of naar Folkestone voor de trein.
The road trip to England and Wales mainly takes you past cities with a varying historical content. The Towns we visit in Wales have some very nice castles. We start in Kent in Canterbury, with the most beautiful cathedral in the United Kingdom, then castle, Canterbury and the old town with many half-timbered houses and picturesque streets.
On the way to Rye we pass Tonbridge with Tonbridge Castle and here and there half-timbered houses. Rye is situated on the coast, a small picturesque town with again beautiful half-timbered houses and 2 typical defensive castles overlooking a lagoon.
Oxford is the next destination a typical student city dynamic against a historic backdrop, special in all its facets, including the Ashmolean Museum and the area around the Castle-Prison museum is a wonderful environment Stratford-upon-Avon on the River Avon is Shakespeare's home town, has a small historic centre.
The next destination is Aberystwyth in Wales located on the Irish Sea, a university town The university is located next to the castle ruins on the beautiful boulevard. At the highest point of Aberystwyth we have a distant view of the top of Mount Snowdon which we encounter later on the route.
North we continue the route to Campsite Cae Du in Beddgelert, a small town with a beautiful bridge over the Afron Colwyn River, the base for several destinations. Beddgelert has a station of the narrow gauge Welsh Highland Railway with historic locomotives and carriages, enjoy if historic track appeals to you.
With the Welsh Highland Railway, a trip can be made to, for example, a hike over Mount Snowdon, get off at Rhyd Ddu station, a hike over Mount Snowdon and downhill again to Snowdon ranger station.
At Snowdon station decide to continue to Caernarfon or back to Beddgelert. The Snowdon Mountain Railway Llanberis Gwynedd can also reach the top, however this line is very busy so it is wise to bookFrom Beddgelert we can visit Harlech with Harlech Castle.
We continue our route to Caernarfon with Carnarfon Castle which defended the strait of Menai, here the inauguration of Prince Charles took place as Prince of Wales. Beaumaris castle defended the other side of the strait.
On the way to Conwy you can visit Castle Penrhyn, this castle is unlike the Previously visited defensive castles a residential castle, a huge complex with the Walled Garden and the castle is completely authentically furnished. We then reach Conwy with an imposing castle to defend the crossing over the River Conway and reached via the equally imposing Chain Bridge.
Now for a bigger bridge to the next destination Lincoln, advice to approach the higher Old Town from the south via Steep Hill, it is a climb up the hill but the walk through this beautiful Steep Hill will pay off a lot to eventually see the beautiful area around the Cathedral and Lincoln Castle. Then follows Peterborough, a beautiful center square with the Peterborough Cathedral on the east side. We continue the route to the third university city of Cambridge with a historic center where the beautiful university buildings dominate the center and the vast Fellows Garden along the River Cam.
The final destination is Rochester, with Rochester Castle along the River Medway. Back to Dover for the Ferry crossing or to Folkestone for the train.
